The Queen Mary Reserve Trust - Who, how & why?

Mission Statement:

The Trust was set up in response to the Canterbury District Health Board’s announcement of its intention to sell the site of Queen Mary Hospital in Hanmer Springs.  Many people were concerned that the special nature of the site would be lost to commercial development. In October 2008 the Government vested the northern 6 hectares of the Hospital grounds in to the care of the Hurunui District Council. It will now safely remain open to the public.

Aims

· To continue to promote the retention of public ownership of the site

· To promote retention and securing of public access to the site in perpetuity subject only to restrictions relating to public safety and health.

· To encourage and promote the conservation of the heritage features of the Site, including the Chisholm ward and Soldiers’ Block but not necessarily limited thereto

· Encourage and promote opportunities and activities that will enhance the use of the Site as a place for recreation, relaxation and rehabilitation and other health-related purposes for the well-being of the community

· Encourage active participation by businesses, the residents of Hanmer Springs, Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu and Hurunui District Council in promoting the values of the Site as a place for recreation, relaxation and rehabilitation

· Advise on and work in partnership with or on behalf of other public bodies, trusts and health related organisations in developing the use of the Site.

The Trust was incorporated as a Charitable Trust on 8th January 2004.
