Comments on the sale of QMH Land

“I feel very strongly about this issue and would love to see the beautiful grounds kept and not built on.”  JP Nelson.

“Enclosed please find the Queen Mary Hospital petition form. We all hope the outcome will be successful.  There has been no difficulty in collecting signatures.  People are eager to sign.  No refusals.”  MW Rangiora

“Several people said they did not know about the land sale and are very much opposed to it.   This is just to let you know you have lots of support from the wider community”    MT Christchurch

“We fully support work to keep the Queen Mary Reserve in public hands” GB Nelson

“I saw your article in The Star the other night about your ideas for Queen Mary Hospital and opening it up to the public and saving it from being sold.  I think that is a great idea and would like to help.”  BTA Chch

“I hope the petition is acknowledged.  It’s just awful what has and is happening in the country.”  VS Nelson

“Of the number of things I’ve done in my life, the most beneficial to me as a person, was the going to Queen Mary as a patient in 1981. “  G B Blenheim

“I am absolutely horrified about what is going on .... it’s criminal ...  I have been coming to Hanmer for 50 years ...... I’m sure that the surroundings have a therapeutic value” MP, Christchurch.

“Having worked at QMH in its better years  – namely 1956 – 1967, I now regard it as a privilege to have been there and worked with the likes of Dr Tom Maling, Sir Charles Burns and many others.

I married an ex-patient – a war shattered veteran who needed the restorative treatment that QMH offered.  Marrying from the Nurse’s Home with Matron Margaret Petrie as locum parentis  “mother” it was quite an occasion for the village!  Happily, the marriage lasted 46 years until death claimed my husband.

A young niece of mine, who worked at Q.M.H until its closure, had a flat in Chisholm Block and tells me the “friendly ghost” is still in residence.  But that is another long story.

Keep strong in your commitment and God give you the strength to fight the good fight.” MM   S.R.N   F.N.D.  Cheviot

“ I write to assure you of continuing support in your bid to save Queen Mary from Ministry of Health attempts to sell this haven of healing.

All over New Zealand former patients, their families and friends see Queen Mary as an oasis of healing, with a record of success unmatched in New Zealand.

I note that the Regional Health Spokesman Murray Dixon said (TV Radio 9th July) that there will be no hasty sale and that Ngai Tahu would have first refusal.  Recognizing the large number of young Maori (and Polynesians) who have benefited from Queen Mary courses, would the Trust see a future in negotiating for a bi-cultural therapeutic use?

I write as an ignorant lay person who feels angry and frustrated at this short sighted Government policy.

All strength to your arm.  God bless.” P S Nelson
